The 2023 AFSE PhD prize has been awarded to Mathilde MUNOZ 

For her PhD Dissertation entitle "Essays on taxation and international worker mobility in Europe" - a research carried out at EHESS and Paris School of Economics under the supervision of Thomas Piketty and defended on June, 21, 2022

More about Mathilde MUNOZ

Mathilde is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Center on Wealth and Income Inequality at UC Berkeley. She will be joining the faculty of UC Berkeley in July 2023 as an Assistant Professor of Economics.

Her PhD Dissertation focuses on the interaction between globalization and redistribution, by studying, with a special focus on Europe, how trade and migration flows respond to international differences in personal taxes and labor market regulations, and by estimating how those flows shape inequalities within and across countries.

The very high quality of the submitted theses also led the jury to award two special mentions (in alphabetical order) to Lydia ASSOUAD and Yohan RENARD.

Lydia's PhD dissertation is entitled "Essays on the Political Economy of Development of the Middle East". Her research has been carried out at EHESS under the co-supervision of Thomas Piketty and Ekaterina Zhuravskaya.

Lydia is now an Assistant Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, department of International Development. 

In 2024, she will also become an Academy Scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies.

Her research interests lie at the intersection of development economics, political economy and economic history, with a particular focus on the Middle East.

Yohan's PhD Dissertation is entitled "Improving Child Health in Sub-Saharan Africa; Three essays in Microeconometrics" - His Research has been carried out at Université Paris-Dauphine under the supervision of Marta Menéndez and Elodie Djemaï.

More about Yohan RENARD

 Yohan is currently a lecturer and researcher at the Université Paris Dauphine - PSL, and a member of the joint research unit LEDa (Université Paris Dauphine, CNRS, IRD) - DIAL. 

His research covers topics in applied microeconomics at the intersection of health and development economics. It explores several issues such as access to healthcare, determinants of human capital formation, as well as the health and economic consequences of the construction of infrastructures.
