What policies are needed to reduce post-harvest food losses, and what are the externalities for the economy?

Around a quarter of the world's food production is lost, with 25% to 50% of food thrown away along the supply chain. Yet there is a link between food losses and supply availability on the one hand, and the ability of food systems to ensure global food security on the other. These findings underline the urgent need to devise concrete policies to combat post-harvest food losses. In this article, which takes up the main findings of an article published in the Revue d'économie politique, we propose a Minimum Logistical Standard policy aimed at limiting logistical under-investment along the production and distribution chain, whose effectiveness we assess not only in terms of reducing food losses, but also in relation to collateral effects in terms of price, supply and exclusion of producers.
