What are the implications of considering supply chain linkages in the propagation of extreme climate shocks across sectors and space?
By Guglielmo Zappalà, Postdoctoral Researcher at UC Berkeley and a research fellow at IC Migrations
Winner of the AFSE 2024 thesis prize for his thesis entitled "Adaptation, Beliefs, and Impacts: Essays on the Economics of Climate", prepared and defended at the Paris School of Economics under the supervision of Katrin Millock, Guglielmo Zappalà presents in this post the results of a microeconometric study on the implications of estimating the impact of weather shocks on sectoral economic output by taking into account the links between inputs and outputs in a global production network. Its results show that it is important to integrate trade links : downstream sectors, although not sensitive to local weather conditions, suffer substantial losses due to upstream thermal shocks in agriculture.
