Paris: fewer lanes in the center, more pollution on the ring road

Winner of a special mention in the AFSE 2024 prize for her thesis entitled "Essays in Urban and Environmental Economics", prepared and defended at the École Polytechnique under the joint supervision of Benoît Schmutz and Patricia Crifo, Léa Bou Sleiman presents in this post the main results of a chapter of her thesis, devoted to the fight against air pollution in Paris, through the closure of the "Georges Pompidou" expressway. She shows that this closure did reduce pollution in the city center, but to the detriment of the suburbs, underlining the difficulty of reconciling the fight against road congestion and the fight against pollution.
